Microcement Training — Lesson 3: Sanding and Second Base Coat

After installing the reinforcement mesh and applying the first microcement Base coat, the floor is ready for the next stage: sanding, removing the dust, and applying a second Base coat. In Lesson 3 of our Microcement Training Series, we explain how these steps refine the reinforced surface before the decorative finish coats.
The first Base coat embeds the mesh. The second coat helps fill remaining imperfections and improve surface flatness. Both stages contribute to the foundation underneath the finished floor.
Step 1: Inspect the First Base Coat
Allow the first Base coat to dry according to the requirements of the microcement system before sanding. Inspect the surface for raised trowel marks, small ridges, and uneven transitions around mesh overlaps.
The floor does not need to have its final decorative appearance at this stage. However, loose or lifted mesh edges need attention before continuing. Do not try to solve an exposed or poorly embedded mesh edge by aggressively sanding it away.
Step 2: Sand Without Damaging the Reinforcement
Sand the dried Base coat to reduce raised application marks and smooth the transitions between sections. Work with controlled pressure and check the surface as you go.
The goal is not to sand through the reinforcement mesh. It is to create a clean, even foundation while keeping the reinforcement intact. Concentrate on high spots rather than removing material uniformly from every area.
Choose the abrasive and sanding method specified for the Base material you are using. This lesson focuses on preparing the reinforced Base layer; the finer sanding of the decorative finish is covered separately in Lesson 4.
Step 3: Vacuum and Remove the Sanding Dust
After sanding, thoroughly vacuum the entire floor. Pay attention to corners, edges, and any areas where fine dust collects. Check that no loose particles remain before applying the next coat.
Dust left between layers can interfere with adhesion. The second Base coat should be applied to the properly prepared surface, rather than over a layer of sanding residue. Follow the system instructions for any additional cleaning or preparation.
Step 4: Apply the Second Base Coat
We apply the second Base coat using a wider stainless steel trowel and controlled circular movements. The wider tool helps bridge small variations and distribute the material across a broader area.
Work in manageable sections, blending each pass into the surrounding material. Use the coat to fill remaining shallow imperfections, refine transitions, and improve surface flatness. Check for ridges as you work instead of leaving large application marks to correct later.
The purpose of this coat is to refine the foundation for the decorative finish. It is not a substitute for repairing an unstable substrate or correcting major floor-level differences. Apply the material within the thickness and working limits specified for the system.
What Comes After the Second Base Coat?
Let the second Base coat dry as required before proceeding. Inspect and prepare it for the decorative microcement Finish coats. In Lesson 4, we continue with finish application and sanding; Lesson 5 covers the decorative treatment and protective sealing used on this floor.
Every layer has a purpose. Every detail affects the final result.
