How to Apply Microcement Finish Coats: Lesson 4
The finish coats are where our microcement floor starts to take on its final appearance. In Lesson 4 of our microcement training series, we work on creating a smoother, more even surface through careful application and sanding.
We applied two microcement finish coats, using light, circular spatula movements to spread the material. We also show how sanding fits into the process, from preparation with 120-grit sandpaper to final smoothing with 220-grit.

Preparing the Surface Before Applying the Finish
Before applying the microcement finish, we sanded the prepared base surface with 120-grit sandpaper to reduce raised spots and application marks.
The goal at this stage was to give the finish coat a smoother surface to work over. We paid particular attention to ridges and transitions that could affect the next layer.
After sanding, we removed the dust before continuing with the finish application.
Applying the Microcement Finish with a Spatula
In this lesson, we used a wide spatula to apply the finish with light, circular movements.
Working in overlapping passes, we gradually covered the surface and blended each section into the surrounding area. The video gives a close-up view of the movement: gentle, controlled circles that help distribute the material and soften the edges between passes.
We worked across the floor in manageable sections, paying attention to the material left behind by each stroke. Our focus was an even application with as few raised edges as possible.
The finish stage also brings out the visual character of the microcement. In our floor, the overlapping movements created subtle tonal variation while we worked toward a smoother surface.
Two Finish Coats, with Sanding Between Them
This project received two finish coats.
After the first finish coat dried, we lightly sanded it with 120-grit sandpaper to reduce application marks and small raised areas. We then removed the dust and applied the second finish coat using the same light, circular technique.
To keep Lesson 4 focused, the video does not repeat the entire application process twice. The floor shown at the end of this stage has received both finish coats.
That second application gave us another opportunity to refine the surface and improve the consistency of the finish.
Final Sanding with 220-Grit Sandpaper
Once the second finish coat had dried, we sanded the surface with 220-grit sandpaper.
At this stage, we focused on smoothing the remaining small ridges and spatula marks. We checked the surface as we worked, concentrating on areas that needed additional attention.
This was a refinement step. Our aim was to leave the floor smooth and even to the touch while retaining the decorative appearance created during application.

What Comes Next? PU Varnish
With the finish coats applied and the final sanding completed, our floor is ready for the next stage of the project: preparation for the PU varnish application.
The floor shown in this lesson is still at the pre-varnish stage. We will cover the protective coating separately in the next lesson, keeping the focus here on applying and smoothing the microcement finish.
