Microcement Training — Lesson 5: Decorative Floor Finish and Protective Sealing

How do you turn a prepared microcement floor into a finished decorative surface? In the final lesson of our five-part Microcement Training Series by Silk Plaster USA, we show the last stages of our floor project: applying a Nappa decorative finish, smoothing it with a trowel, and sealing the surface with a two-component polyurethane varnish.
If you have been following the series, you have already seen the work underneath the finished floor—from surface preparation and mesh reinforcement to the microcement base and finish coats. This lesson brings those stages together and reveals the completed result.
Watch the video below to see how we created the floor’s continuous, stone-like appearance, subtle color movement, and soft sheen.
From Microcement Finish Coats to the Final Decorative Effect
In Lesson 4, we applied the microcement finish coats that established the surface and its underlying character. For this particular project, we wanted to add another decorative dimension before applying the protective coating.
We chose Nappa to introduce gentle variations in color and create a more expressive, natural stone effect over the prepared microcement.
This is the decorative approach used in the floor shown in our video. It demonstrates how the final appearance develops through both the material and the applicator’s technique.

Step 1: Applying Nappa with a Wide Brush
We began by applying the Nappa decorative layer with a wide brush, working across the prepared microcement surface.
At this stage, the brush establishes the initial movement of the pattern. The goal is to create a connected composition across the floor, with variations that flow naturally from one area into the next.
When watching the video, pay attention to how the decorative layer changes the appearance of the underlying microcement. The surface begins to develop depth, with softer and more pronounced areas of color forming part of the same overall finish.
For decorative flooring, consistency does not mean making every section look identical. It means creating a balanced effect that feels continuous throughout the space.
Step 2: Smoothing the Decorative Layer with a Trowel
After applying Nappa, we gently worked the decorative layer with a stainless steel trowel.
This step blends the brushwork and refines the pattern. The movement of the trowel helps create the continuous, stone-like character visible in the completed floor.
Pressure and direction influence the appearance of a decorative finish. In this project, we used controlled movements and light smoothing to keep the variations soft and connected.
The video shows how brushing and troweling work together: the brush introduces the decorative movement, while the trowel brings the effect into balance.
Step 3: Sealing the Floor with Two-Component Polyurethane Varnish
Once the decorative layer had dried, we moved on to the protective coating.
For this floor, we applied a two-component polyurethane varnish, also called a 2K polyurethane coating, using a brush. This is the final sealing stage shown in the video.
The protective coating is an essential part of completing this microcement flooring system. It also brings out the appearance of the decorative surface, making the color variations and overall finish easier to appreciate.
Application requirements depend on the specific coating being used. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for component ratios, mixing, coverage, number of coats, recoating intervals, and curing before putting the floor into service.
The Finished Microcement Floor
The final part of the video reveals the completed floor.
You can see the continuous appearance of the surface, the gentle movement within the decorative layer, and the soft sheen of the protective finish. The effect comes from the combination of the prepared microcement underneath, the Nappa decorative treatment, and the final polyurethane coating.
This is why each stage of a microcement floor installation matters. Much of the preparation becomes invisible once the project is complete, but it provides the foundation for the finished appearance.
Explore the Complete Microcement Training Series
Our five-part series follows a real floor project through the main stages of application:
Lesson 1 — Surface Preparation: preparing the existing surface for the microcement system.
Lesson 2 — Mesh Reinforcement: installing fiberglass mesh within the base layer.
Lesson 3 — Sanding and Second Base Coat: refining and building the base.
Lesson 4 — Microcement Finish Coats: developing the surface’s color and character.
Lesson 5 — Decorative Finish and Protective Sealing: completing the decorative effect and applying the final protective coating.
Together, these lessons provide a practical introduction to the microcement application process. Watch the earlier lessons to understand what went into the floor before the final decorative work began.
