Microcement Base vs. Finish: When Do You Need the Full Reinforced System?

One of the most common questions we receive about microcement is:

Do I always need Base and fiberglass mesh, or can I apply Microcement Finish directly?

The answer depends on the surface, its condition, and—most importantly—how that surface will be used.

Microcement is a thin decorative coating system. The decorative Finish creates the final color, texture, and visual character, while the Base and reinforcement mesh provide additional strength and help the system accommodate minor stresses and movement from the substrate.

Here is how we approach at Silk Plaster USA.


When Can Microcement Finish Be Used Without a Base Coat?

For certain decorative wall applications, a simplified system may be appropriate.

For example, imagine a solid interior accent wall that is:

  • structurally stable;

  • properly prepared;

  • smooth and level;

  • free from active cracks;

  • not exposed to significant mechanical stress or movement.

In this situation, it may be possible to apply two coats of Microcement Finish over the properly prepared and primed substrate without building a full reinforced Base system.

This can be an excellent solution for:

  • accent walls;

  • decorative feature walls;

  • vertical architectural elements;

  • low-stress interior surfaces;

  • certain furniture or decorative applications when the substrate is suitable.

The purpose here is primarily decorative. Nobody is walking on the wall, furniture is not constantly loading it, and the surface normally experiences much less mechanical stress than a floor.

However, proper substrate preparation is still essential.


PU Varnish Is Still Required

Skipping the Base does not mean skipping the protective system.

After the Microcement Finish has properly cured, we recommend protecting the completed surface with 2K polyurethane (PU) varnish according to the specified application system.

The varnish protects the decorative microcement surface against moisture, staining, cleaning, abrasion, and normal everyday contact.

Think of it this way:

Microcement Finish creates the appearance.PU varnish protects that appearance.

The protective coating is therefore an essential part of the completed microcement system.


When Is Microcement Base Required?

The situation changes significantly when we move from a decorative wall to a floor or another mechanically demanding surface.

A floor is constantly subjected to stress.

People walk across it. Furniture creates concentrated loads. Doors, appliances and other objects can create vibration. Temperature and humidity changes can affect the substrate. Different materials underneath the microcement can expand and contract differently.

Even when you cannot physically see movement, small amounts of substrate movement can exist.

Because microcement is a thin coating rather than a structural slab, these stresses should not simply be ignored.

For floors, high-stress surfaces, and substrates where movement or cracking is a concern, Silk Plaster USA recommends a professional reinforced microcement system.


The Professional Reinforced Microcement System

A typical reinforced system includes:

1. Proper substrate preparation

The substrate must be solid, clean, dry, stable, and properly prepared before any decorative coating is applied.

2. Appropriate primer

Primer creates the necessary bond between the existing substrate and the microcement system. The correct primer depends on the substrate and project conditions.

3. Fiberglass reinforcement mesh

The mesh becomes part of the reinforcement layer and helps distribute stress across the surface.

This is particularly important where there are joints, transitions between materials, existing cracks, or potential substrate movement.

4. Microcement Base

The Base embeds the reinforcement and creates a stronger, more uniform foundation for the decorative Finish.

Depending on the project and system specification, multiple Base coats may be required.

5. Microcement Finish

After the reinforced Base has been prepared and sanded correctly, the decorative Finish is applied—typically in two thin coats.

This is the layer responsible for the final texture, movement, color variation, and overall appearance.

6. 2K PU Varnish

Finally, the completed microcement surface is protected with the specified polyurethane varnish system.


Why Mesh and Base Matter on Floors

A common mistake is to think:

"The concrete underneath looks solid, so why do I need reinforcement?"

Because microcement is only a few millimeters thick.

It does not replace the structural substrate underneath it, and it cannot magically prevent an unstable substrate from moving.

Fiberglass mesh and the Base system help distribute minor stresses before they reach the thin decorative Finish. Reinforcement mesh is commonly used in professional microcement systems specifically to reduce the risk of cracking caused by substrate movement.

This is why we treat a decorative wall and a floor differently.


Decorative, stable wall

Proper preparation → Primer → Finish ×2 → 2K PU Varnish

A simplified system may be suitable when the substrate and application conditions allow it.

Floor or movement-prone surface

Proper preparation → Primer → Fiberglass Mesh → Base System → Finish ×2 → 2K PU Varnish

This is where professional reinforcement becomes important.


What About Cracked or Unstable Surfaces?

Reinforcement is not a substitute for repairing a bad substrate.

If a floor or wall has active structural cracks, excessive deflection, moisture problems, loose material, failing tile, or other serious substrate issues, those problems must be addressed before applying microcement.

Microcement is a decorative coating system—not a structural repair product.

Even the best Base and fiberglass mesh cannot guarantee that a structural crack underneath will never transfer through the finished surface.


Our Professional Advice

The simplest way to decide whether Base is necessary is to ask:

What stresses will this surface experience after the project is completed?

For a stable decorative wall with minimal mechanical stress, a Finish-only decorative system may be appropriate.

For floors, high-traffic areas, substrates with joints, transitions between different materials, or surfaces where movement is possible, we recommend using the complete reinforced Base and mesh system.

Adding reinforcement requires more material and more labor, but on demanding surfaces it is not simply an extra step—it is part of building the system correctly.

With microcement, the visible Finish may be what everyone notices.


But what is underneath the Finish determines how well the system performs.
